While I was going through my collection of photos taken with the Pentax ME-Super searching for sunset photos I found all these photos taken during December 2009 and January 2010 in the small town of Beline, on the Mozambique coast, just north of Maputo.

Now that I’ve been shooting almost exclusively with digital again I’m really taken with the grainy, imperfect but still quite beautiful look my trusty old Pentax gives to shots. I’ve been trying to emulate this style with my digital shots, but it’s nearly impossible.

I was going through my catalogue of shots taken with my antique Pentax ME-Super film camera, and realised that I clearly have some sort of affinity for sunsets. So, I decided to pick some of them and stick them up here, in their grainy, sometimes washed out, sometimes messed up glory.

Most of these shots are from my balcony, but a few are from around the country.

I managed to get a few reasonably cool shots of William Bishop of the death metal band Architecture of Aggression. They were… aggressive.

One of the perks of shooting on film is that often things don’t work out as expected. The colours on this beach scene surprised me quite a bit. It almost looks cross processed, except it isn’t.

You’d think the beach was cold judging from what the photo looks like, but don’t be mistaken, the day was about 40 degrees when this was taken.

This is another one of those accidentally messed up shots that somehow make me feel great. Don’t ask me why, maybe someone else can explain it.

After some convincing I managed to get the entourage to stand still for just long enough to get this shot. This is in one of the main streets of Beline, near the market.

Back in Mozambique, Janice and our waitress got along like chicken and spicy marinade. Frelimo, one of the Mozambican political parties and currently the ones in charge is very well supported in the South where we were. Politics in general seems to be quite an important affair. These shirts can be seen everywhere.

Same old house where Retha is house-sitting has these massive muchrooms growing out of the lawn in certain parts of the garden. I quite like how the contrast on the Ilford C-41 black and white film turned out on this one.

Retha is house-sitting a great old house in Bryanston. It’s very old, and the plants are starting to take over.
