While I was going through my collection of photos taken with the Pentax ME-Super searching for sunset photos I found all these photos taken during December 2009 and January 2010 in the small town of Beline, on the Mozambique coast, just north of Maputo.

Now that I’ve been shooting almost exclusively with digital again I’m really taken with the grainy, imperfect but still quite beautiful look my trusty old Pentax gives to shots. I’ve been trying to emulate this style with my digital shots, but it’s nearly impossible.

I was going through my catalogue of shots taken with my antique Pentax ME-Super film camera, and realised that I clearly have some sort of affinity for sunsets. So, I decided to pick some of them and stick them up here, in their grainy, sometimes washed out, sometimes messed up glory.

Most of these shots are from my balcony, but a few are from around the country.

Christina graciously agreed to let me take some shots of her practising yoga in Jan Cilliers Park, a beautiful park in Groenkloof, Pretoria. This was the first time I had an opportunity to use my new super huge reflector to light up a subject. The reflector made for an interesting change that I’m yet to get used to, but that was definitely very cool.

This was my “team” for the day. I got to order them around with the reflector, which was fun, but made me realise that operating a reflector is no joke – it’s hard to get the damned thing aimed properly – and that my friends are incorrigible jokers.

So, finally, I have a polarising filter for my 24mm – 105mm lens!

I thought I’d show the difference the filter makes. Above are two shots. The first is without the polariser. As you can see, the blue reflections from the sky are quite obvious. The second shot is with the filter, and all the reflections are gone, giving the photo an entirely different quality.

Edit: The shots below make it even more clear how the polarising filter cuts out reflection.

The other day I looked over the side of my balcony and saw some workers digging this hole. I was quite astonished to see the “inner workings” of the earth where I never expected anything. It made me feel almost like a voyeur, in a very unusual sense of the word.

Juggernaught describes themselves alternately as “South Africa’s Rock ‘n Roll Mountain Men” and  “a bunch of hairy, whiskey guzzling, guitar slingin’ men, who play hairy, whiskey guzzling, guitar slingin’ music“, they combine Classic Rock, Southern Metal, Blues and Rock ‘n Roll into “one loud, dirty and bad ass brew” they call “man-rock“.

I’ve been following some of their gigs around lately, and these shots are from the Landmine Rock festival, held in Pretoria North (Wolmer) recently.

Here are some shots of the band Rhütz. I caught them at Landmine Rock @ Wolmer last night. This guy above, Steven Foukaridis, has one helluva stage presence. I was impressed.

I went to go check out Cortina Whiplash at Tings ‘an Times, and wow, was I impressed. They have a very energetic stage presence. So much so that I think I want their babies.

Even though the photo above is a little messy I just had to put it in. Reminds me of Björk for some reason…

The shot above is actually a HDR shot, as I was shooting against the sun and still wanted all the detail from the dragon’s body.

Thanks to Oriel’s prodding I dragged my sorry backside out of bed bright and early this Sunday morning, got on my bike and took a ride out to Bronkhorstspruit to Nan Hua, the Buddhist temple. Here is a selection of shots from the day.

A lady came up to me and tried to explain how this statue is very important, and how the way the fingers is held is also significant, but I have to admit it went in the one ear, and out the other.

Below is a HDR I did. It’s the first HDR I’ve ever done that I’m happy enough with to publish. Yay!
